Top tips for preparing your home for winter viewings

Winter is here, bringing with it shorter days and colder weather. If you have your home on the market, or are looking to sell, you may be wondering how to make your home appealing during the winter months. Read on for our top tips.
As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, selling your home in winter might seem challenging. However, with the right approach, you can ensure that your home looks inviting so that potential buyers won’t want to leave! Here are our top tips on how to make your home stand out during those chilly winter viewings.

Make your home feel cosy

Whilst in the summer we want to throw the patio doors open and let the outside in, during winter months try to create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere.  Start by setting your heating to a comfortable temperature before viewings. If you have a fireplace or log burner, make sure it is lit so buyers can really picture themselves relaxing next to the crackling fire with a warm mug of tea on a cold winter’s day. Layering soft furnishings like throws and cushions in rich, inviting colours can transform your living spaces making them feel warmer and more comfortable.

Let there be light

One of the main concerns sellers have with house viewings in winter months is the lack of light on the shorter days. Therefore, maximising natural light by keeping curtains and blinds open during daytime appointments is key. For greyer days or evening viewings, ensure all lights are switched on, including lamps, entrance lights and outdoor lighting to create a warm glow throughout your home. Avoid using harsh, bright white light bulbs, instead opt for warmer-toned bulbs to avoid a cold feel. For an extra touch, why not light some strategically placed scented candles throughout your home.

Timing is key

Whenever possible, try and arrange viewings during daylight hours to ensure your home is as light and bright as possible so buyers can see your property and its surroundings clearly. If you do have viewings later in the afternoon or evening, make sure your home is well-lit both inside and out. Using solar-powered lanterns or exterior lights can really help showcase your outside space.

Spruce up your garden

Make sure your outside space looks just as tidy and inviting as the inside of your home. Start by clearing any fallen leaves , weeding the flowerbeds and patios, and removing any dead plants. If you have garden furniture ensure it is looking clean and presentable to make your outside space inviting, even in the middle of winter! Try adding a splash of colour with some hardy plants or winter-flowering shrubs in pots near your front door.

Create a welcoming entrance

When it comes to selling your home first impressions really do count so pay special attention to your home’s entrance. Ensure that any pathways are clear of leaves and weeds and entry lights are on. During the colder and wetter months, a fresh doormat and a wreath on the door can make your home more inviting. Inside, create a designated space for viewers to leave wet coats and umbrellas and possibly leave out shoe covers in case viewers would prefer to keep their shoes on during a viewing.  You don’t want to come home to muddy footprints on your carpets and flooring!

Highlight energy efficiency

What better time to showcase your home’s energy efficiency than during the winter months? If you have double-glazing, underfloor heating or a new boiler make sure your estate agent is aware so they can mention these to potential buyers.

Finishing touches

Before each viewing, do a quick sweep of your home. Declutter surfaces, plump cushions, and ensure everything is tidy and in its place. It may be helpful to open windows briefly to let fresh air in, but remember to close them in time for the house to warm up before viewers arrive. Ensure lights are on, fires are lit and a few strategic candles are dotted around to make sure your home is warm, welcoming and looking its best during the winter months. A house that feels like a cosy retreat from the winter chill is bound to leave a lasting impression on potential buyers.
